Gravitate Health at MIE 2022 Conference
We are thrilled to announce that Gravitate Health will be present at the Medical Health Informatics (MIE) 2022 Conference in Nice, with several sessions, presented below.
Workshop | Current State and Future Directions of Patients’ Access to their Electronic Health Records across Europe – an interactive workshop | Friday, May 27th, 16:00 - 17:30 CET
In this workshop, the topic of the benefits of citizen access and use of their data, and issues arising from implementation will be discussed based on results from a currently ongoing European survey; said survey elicits to what extent patients across Europe can access their records online and engages the participants in discussions of strategies to interact with the data and potentially added value in curating their information for personal use. Gravitate Health coordinator Anne Moen, participates as speaker in the workshop chaired by Maria Hagglund.
Patient portals are increasingly available to facilitate access to personal health information and used to facilitate communication between patients and healthcare professionals, as well as for performing administrative tasks, such as appointment bookings and prescription renewals. Patients are also increasingly provided with access to their electronic health records (EHRs), as a service to “look up and read” information, sometimes referred to as patient accessible EHRs (PAEHRs), or when referring specifically to the notes in the record, ‘open notes’, through portals. This is an important contribution to “Personal Health Data Spaces” to support citizen use of their data in line with the effort for setting up a European Health Data Space.
Research evidence reports positive outcomes among patients accessing their records, and the concerns expressed by healthcare professionals have not been realised. Patients who read their notes report better understanding of their care plans, feeling more in control of their care, doing a better job taking their medications improved communication with and trust in their clinicians and improved patient safety. Yet, implementation is far from straight forward, and many obstacles hinder or delay progress in uptake and use.

The paper entitled “An agile approach to accelerate development and adoption of electronic Product Information standards” will be presented by Catherine Chronaki in this session chaired by Felix Holl.
In this paper, co-authors and Gravitate Health partners Catherine Chronaki, Anne Moen, Petter Hurlen, Jens Kristian Villandsen, Giovanna Maria Ferarri, Craig Anderson, and Giorgio Cangioli present the agile technical approach and co-creation process to design, test, and progressively mature interoperability working with the HL7 Vulcan Accelerator and FHIR Connectathons.
The Medical Product Information found in most medication boxes offer a wealth of information, including terms of active ingredients, excipients, indications, dosage, route of administration, risks, and safety information.
Digital health services that help patients, their care givers, and health professionals to manage medication, can be improved with tailored information based on user profile, the patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) summary, and Medicinal Product Information. The electronic Product information (ePI) comprises the summary of product characteristics, package leaflet, and product label.
The European Medicines Agency released in 2021 the first version of the EU proof-of-concept ePI standard based on HL7 FHIR. The Gravitate Health project uses this common standard as a springboard to implement a federated open-source platform and services that helps advance access, understanding, and adherence by providing trusted medicinal information in an interoperable and scalable way.

Tutorial | HL7 FHIR for electronic Product Information and Patient Summaries | Sunday, May 29th, 07:45-10:30 CET
The topic of this tutorial is interoperability and accessibility of ePI specifications for medications. Participants will learn how to use IPS of individuals to highlight information in their medication PL to increase ePI use, safety and minimize risk.
Experience acquired during the HL7 FHIR Connectathons: Gravitate Health ePI Track under Hl7 Vulcan Accelerator will be shared during the tutorial. Short lectures will be offered with hands-on exercises, and Q & A sessions.
HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®), the most recent family of standards by HL7 brings the Application Programming Interface (API) thinking in the healthcare information technology. Several agencies have released HL7 FHIR® specifications stimulating the agile implementations of Minimum Viable Products (MVPs).
Gravitate Health collaborates with the Vulcan’s ePI project to mature the FHIR ePI specification and to validate its progress HL7 FHIR connectathons three times a year. This methodology for developing FHIR ePIs has been incorporated in the Gravitate Health HL7 FHIR® IG (Implementation Guide), that will be used in this tutorial.
This tutorial aims to bring participating medical and clinical informaticians closer to HL7 FHIR® tools, introducing them to HL7 FHIR electronic Product Information (ePI) specifications and the HL7 FHIR® International Patient Summary (IPS) implementation guide (IG). IPS specifies an international Electronic Health Record except which serves as a snapshot of an individual’s health and medications.
